John Bercow given Royal approbation as Speaker, part 1

The new Speaker formally took up the role in an “approbation” ceremony – the process of Royal approval. Accompanied by Black Rod, Mr Bercow led MPs from the Commons to the Lords chamber for the ceremony where he was approved in the role after the Lords received a letter from Queen Elizabeth II. Former Speaker, Betty Boothroyd, commentates.

    I think it’s because he brilliantly interrupts moments of formality with the perfect comedic comments. I’ve heard that during the 1999 State Opening, he called out, a few seconds after Black Rod had summoned the Commons, I bet he drinks Carling Black Label!!!! I wish someone would post that on here!!!

    John Bercow looks about 58. I was shocked when I found out he was only 46!!

    I find the turnout of the Commons and in the Lords is scandalous!
    MPs are paid to represent the people not to be off doing other jobs.
