John Bercow given Royal approbation as Speaker, part 1
The new Speaker formally took up the role in an “approbation” ceremony – the process of Royal approval. Accompanied by Black Rod, Mr Bercow led MPs from the Commons to the Lords chamber for the ceremony where he was approved in the role after the Lords received a letter from Queen Elizabeth II. Former Speaker, Betty Boothroyd, commentates.
Did Dennis Skinner say anything this time?
Dennis said “New Black Rod eh?!?!” Brilliant!!! Wonder what he’ll say in November?
I like how whenever Black Rod comes into the Commons, everyone is instead looking rather expectently at Dennis Skinner to see what he says!!!
Even though, I am a DIE HEART Royalist but I always find Skinner hilarious!!!
I think it’s because he brilliantly interrupts moments of formality with the perfect comedic comments. I’ve heard that during the 1999 State Opening, he called out, a few seconds after Black Rod had summoned the Commons, I bet he drinks Carling Black Label!!!! I wish someone would post that on here!!!
Like Betty Boothroyd’s commentary when she says I thought he was going to break it down!!
John Bercow looks about 58. I was shocked when I found out he was only 46!!
I think he was a heavy smoker.
The ciggies might have stunted his growth too.
Nah. He looks 46 but with very grey hair.
I find the turnout of the Commons and in the Lords is scandalous!
MPs are paid to represent the people not to be off doing other jobs.
A lot of an MP’s work is not done in the chamber.
He looks 58.
